Dental Abscess: Signs, Risks and Why It Needs Prompt Treatment
Updated 2026-11-02 · General information, not medical advice.
An abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum. It will not heal on its own.
Common signs
- Throbbing pain that may spread to the jaw, neck or ear
- A pimple-like bump on the gum that may leak fluid
- Swelling of the gum or face
- Bad taste, fever, or tender lymph nodes
Why it's urgent
Infection can spread to the jaw and surrounding tissues. Rarely it becomes life-threatening. If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, call 911.
Treatment
A dentist may drain the abscess, perform a root canal, or extract the tooth, and may prescribe antibiotics. Search our city pages for a same-day appointment.
