Knocked-Out Tooth: What to Do in the First 60 Minutes
Updated 2026-11-02 · General information, not medical advice.
A knocked-out (avulsed) permanent tooth can often be saved if it is put back quickly. Act fast.
- Pick it up by the crown (the white part), never the root.
- Rinse briefly with milk or water if dirty. Do not scrub or use soap.
- Try to put it back in the socket and bite gently on gauze.
- If you can't, keep it in cold milk, saline, or inside your cheek. Never store it dry or in tap water for long.
- Get to a dentist immediately, ideally within 30–60 minutes.
Baby teeth are different
Do not re-insert a knocked-out baby tooth — it can damage the adult tooth underneath. Still call a dentist.
