Wisdom Tooth Pain: When Is It an Emergency?
Updated 2026-11-02 · General information, not medical advice.
Wisdom teeth usually arrive between ages 17 and 25. Many cause no trouble; others get stuck (impacted) and trigger pain.
Normal vs. urgent
Mild soreness that comes and goes as the tooth erupts is common. Pericoronitis — infection of the gum flap over the tooth — causes swelling, bad taste and pain when chewing, and needs a dentist within a day or two.
Seek care the same day if
- You can't fully open your mouth
- Swelling spreads to the cheek or jaw
- You have a fever
Relief in the meantime
Warm salt-water rinses, careful cleaning around the tooth and over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Find oral surgeons and same-day dentists near you.
