Emergency Dentist vs. ER vs. Urgent Care: Where Should You Go?
Updated 2026-11-02 · General information, not medical advice.
Hospital ERs and urgent care centers can manage pain, infection and trauma, but most cannot repair teeth. Choosing the right place saves time and money.
| Problem | Best place |
|---|---|
| Toothache, abscess without breathing issues | Emergency dentist |
| Knocked-out or broken tooth | Emergency dentist |
| Swelling with fever, trouble swallowing/breathing | ER |
| Broken jaw, head injury | ER |
| Mild pain on a weekend, no swelling | Urgent care for pain control, then a dentist |
An ER visit for a toothache is often expensive and usually ends with "see a dentist." If it is safe to do so, call a dentist with emergency hours first.
